About this deal

Not a problem—unless you’re in love with your childhood best friend…How in the world can Kakeru make Yamato look at him when Yamato is completely out of his league? They are completely normal high school students who have lived a generally happy and uneventful life.

I Cannot Reach you does go over the line of consent in one scene but it is very light and treated as a bad thing. Maybe when more chapters have built up and I develop an emotional countenance stronger than that of a half-melted chocolate eclair, I'll pick it up again. His jealousy, his possessiveness, his yearning to be more than “just friends”… But Yamato is absolutely terrified of losing his best friend Kakeru if he ever admits the truth that he is and has been in love with him forever. neither of them make a move in changing their relationship, so they just stay at an awkward point of knowing there's SOMETHING between them, but not acting upon it out of fear or other personal misgivings. Yen Press bring us Volume 5 in another attractive volume with Mika’s beautiful cover art to the fore and four colour pages at the front, featuring a double-page spread of Mikoto, Yamato’s younger sister. At the end of Volume 4, Yamato hugged Kakeru, saying, “I’m gonna work so much harder… so you’ll like me back. Kakeru is carefree and friendly, but a poor student and he can sometimes be a bit slow on the up take.

It has everything there is to find in a slice-of-life BL manga, with a mix of humor and yearning for that best friend you are hesitant to admit your feelings to. Not a problem—unless you're in love with your childhood best friend…How in the world can Kakeru make Yamato look at him when Yamato is completely out of his league?

Miscommunication or misspoken words are standard fare, but for some reason it feels particularly stressful in this story. Yamato gives him the vaguest of answers and, by impulse, almost lets out a declaration of love toward Kakeru.

My heart just melts with these boys like the stuggle of a confession is so worth it even if it's painful to see. The translation for Yen Press is again by Jan Mitsuko Cook with lettering by Alexis Eckerman and there’s a very helpful page of translation notes. Extras at the end comprise a page of helpful translation notes and the mangaka’s Afterword, as well as several amusing bonus shorts, including ‘If Yamato Was Cheerful and Kakeru Was Not’. Frieren is still going strong continuing from last season, but The Dangers in My Heart is the one stealing the spotlight! thing you read that you are so enamored by that all of a sudden you reach the end of the chapter, yet you're craving for more.

The cool, smart one who’s good at almost everything, and his average, dorky friend who struggles to do anything right-Yamato and Kakeru. EditSynopsis Childhood friends Kakeru Ashiya and Yamato Oohara seem like they would never get along with each other. If you or anyone you know is suicidal or having suicidal thoughts, please reach out to a suicide prevention organization in your country. If anything, Kakeru is much more concerned about the emotional acrobatics required to start viewing a childhood friend you’ve known as long as you can remember in a whole new light as a romantic partner. Their mothers are friends and so the children spend their daily lives in and out of each other’s houses. Love triangles are decidedly not my favourite story convention, so I could see that plotline potentially becoming tiresome in the future, but, so far, I Cannot Reach You is a cute story of youthful first love that I’d say is worth checking out.
